Don't Let Rattlesnakes Rattle Your Cage: Fun Tips for Keeping Them at Bay

Follow the tips below, to help prevent rattlesnakes from getting into their homes and backyards and stay safe.

  1. Seal all entry points: Make sure that all gaps and holes in your yard and exterior of the home are sealed. This includes gaps around doors, windows, and pipes. Rattlesnakes can squeeze through very small openings, so it's important to be thorough in sealing all possible entry points. Exterior fences should be at least 4 feet high above ground.
  2. Keep the yard tidy: Rattlesnakes like to hide in clutter/debris that provides shade from the hot daytime temps. Rattlesnakes may also seek water so make sure there’s no clutter that’ll collect water from the monsoons.
  3. Keep food sources away: Rattlesnakes are attracted to rodents and other small animals. Keeping your yard free of any potential food sources, such as bird feeders or uncovered trash cans. We also recommend using a pest control company.
  4. Be cautious when hiking or gardening: When spending time outside, it's important to be aware of the potential presence of rattlesnakes. Wear protective clothing and footwear, and to watch where you step or place your hands.
  5. Contact a professional: If you find a rattlesnake in your yard or home, contact a professional wildlife removal service or the fire department depending on where you live in Tucson. Attempting to handle a rattlesnake on your own can be dangerous, and it's best to leave it to the experts. If you get bitten immediately call Tucson Poison Control for consultation.
